The Ohio prison population now well exceeds capacity. There are approximately 51,000 inmates in a prison system designed to serve 38,000. With a prison population that continues to grow, what does this crisis mean to our community? Who makes up the prison population? What percentage of this population has mental illness and substance abuse problems? What is being done to address these problems? How does early release of offenders due to overcrowding pose a danger to society?

Presentations will be followed by a question & answer session.

ROTHENBERG CHICAGO FIELDTRIP in May
For the past few years many of you supported our efforts to save the historic Rothenberg building on EastClifton, in addition to the tutoring program. For the school year 2090-2010, all of the administration and a large majority of the staff have been replaced. This is a new era for our neighborhood school and we will be moving back into the newly remodeled facilty in summer of 2012. In the meantime, everyone is dedicated and committed to making a positive change. This includes teachers, staff, students, parents and community.

Many incentive programs have been implemented this year to encourage the children to be serious about learning. There is a three day/two-night field trip to Chicago planned for May. Any child in grades four thru eight will be eligible to participate, based on such criteria as grades, attendance, and conduct. They will be visiting Sears Tower, Millenium Park Botantical Gardens, DuSable Museum of African American History, Shedds Aquarium, Navy Pier, and Museum of Science and Industry.

Each child has been asked to pay a $75.00 deposit and we are working hard to raise the funds for the remaining balance. Inability to pay the deposit will not prevent them from going on the trip. If you would like to help us achieve our financial goal, please send a check made payable to Rothenberg School -Chicago Trip and send it to:

Any amount, small or large, will be greatly appreciated. Many things in our city were built with pennies.
